Paralegal Seminars, Education and Training
Lawyers are depending on paralegals more and more. The realization of the extreme value of a paralegal is due mostly to the fact that a paralegal does much of the same work as a lawyer for a lot less cost. Therefore, lawyers are filling their offices with legal assistants instead of more lawyers. Now is a great time to start a legal career without investing all the cost of becoming an official lawyer. There are so many opportunities to join a paralegal school online or locally. Also joining a group and attending paralegal seminars and training will put you well on your way to an exciting law career.
As a paralegal you will perform many of the same job duties as a lawyer. In fact, you will usually work directly for a lawyer or for a firm. You will need to understand the law, just as a lawyer does, and be able to do accurate research and write thorough, detailed reports. You may also work directly with clients. Although the work is very similar to that of a lawyer, as a paralegal, you are not able to give legal advice or give presentations in the courtroom. On the other hand, you are also not required to go to expensive law school or pass the bar exam.
If interested in becoming a paralegal, there are many career choices from paralegal schools to paralegal seminars and training. An associate’s degree in paralegal studies is the fastest course to becoming a trained paralegal and hitting the workforce. If you already have a degree in another field, you can seek paralegal certification which can be completed in as little as six months. Another option is on the job training. If you’re lucky, you may be able to find a lawyer with the resources to teach you about paralegal work right at their office. These opportunities are at the total discretion of the hiring lawyer or firm and can be very hard to come by. Therefore, paralegal schooling or paralegal seminars and training are really your best options.
During your education, it would be beneficial to join a national, state, or local paralegal association. There are two main national groups that offer continued education through paralegal seminars and training. The National Association of Legal Assistants and the National Federation of Paralegal Associations also offer certification courses which many lawyers hold as their standard for hiring a legal assistant. State and local groups will give you a greater opportunity for networking throughout your area.
You’ll also need to decide what kind of office setting you would like to work in. Do you want to work for a private lawyer or either a small or large law firm? Would you like to be an independent contractor and be your own boss? From there, you will need to decide which branch of law to specialize in such as family law, non-profit, personal injury, business and bankruptcy, entertainment law, real estate law and etcetera. Whatever your ideal work environment, you can achieve it through education along with paralegal seminars and training.
What does a paralegal do? A paralegal does research, paperwork, and generally assists a lawyer or law firm. The details vary by state.
